B&Q class 18P #E1 (rebuilt from 9P #2903P) freshly outshopped

In 2024, the LT&L decided to operate a demonstration passenger service between Portland & Brownsville Junction, ME to show the state of Maine and Amtrak that it would be feasable to operate passenger service along those lines. To do this, passenger equipment was needed, and the Portland shops proposed rebuilding some of the old class 10P motors & 9P trailers that had been stored since the PV&T and LT&L last used them in the 1970s/1980s.

There were 10 class 9P coaches in storage, and when they were rebuilt they were, like the class 17P rebuilds, stretched to make room for a high-level platform center door (every station on the Portland to Brownsville Junction route had high level platforms installed for easy access to the trains, because if you’re putting on a demonstration service why do half-measures even if you’re using remanufactured 65 year old stock.)

Three of these coaches were remanufactured in Portland, the other seven at the Derby shops in Milo; The Derby cars were completed earlier than the Portland cars; E1-E7 were delivered to the temporary passenger yard in Bangor around the same time as the two 17PCB combination motors were, while (Portland-built) E8-E10 are expected to arrive in 2027.
