When the PV&T purchased the BAR, the BAR brought along a tiny fleet of SW9 locomotives, which were almost immediately replaced by some of the ex-D&H GP38s that had been taken out of service after the D&H merger. The last to go – #620 – lingered until the end of 1990 before it was sold.
30-odd years later, when the Ottawa Valley Railway became part of the system, a SW13b was included in the pile of locomotives that came along with the purchase. #1570 was 84 years old at the time (it was originally an Illinois Central TRB, but had gone through several rebuilds since 1940) but still in (surprisingly?) excellent condition, so it was marked for preservation, painted in an orange & white paint scheme much like it had when working on the IC, and kept in service as a booster/remote control engine (as the only member of class DL18b.)
When (Adrian & Blissfield subsidiary) the Charlotte Southern Railroad decided to retire the elderly and historically significant GE 44 ton locomotive that they were using, the BAR’s Derby Shops remanufactured the carcass of a SW900 with a Cummins QSK23 prime mover and an AC drivetrain, then shipped it to the CHS as SW923 #4, followed by ADBF #836 (originally a SW900) & #1223 (SW9). These units are now classified as class DL18c (though the ADBF ignores Portland’s classification system and rosters them as SW923s.)
